Why Telehealth?

While we do occasionally see clients in person in Madison Park, Seattle, we are currently conducting all sessions for new clients via telehealth. While traditional in-person psychotherapy has been the dominant mode of mental health treatment, telehealth has become increasingly popular and accepted in recent years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When it comes to couples and individual therapy, telehealth can work just as well as in-person therapy in many cases. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Convenience and accessibility: Telehealth allows clients to receive therapy from the comfort of their own homes, reducing the time and costs associated with travel. This is particularly beneficial for people who live in remote areas, have mobility issues, or have busy schedules.

  2. Privacy and comfort: Clients may feel more comfortable opening up to their therapist in a familiar and private environment, such as their home, which may help them to better engage with the therapeutic process.

  3. Flexibility: Telehealth offers more flexible scheduling options, including evening and weekend appointments, which can be beneficial for people with busy schedules or family responsibilities.

  4. Similar treatment effectiveness: A growing body of research suggests that teletherapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. In fact, some studies have found that teletherapy can be even more effective than in-person therapy in certain situations, such as for clients who have trouble leaving their homes or for clients who prefer to communicate through written text rather than verbally.

  5. Enhanced therapist-client communication: Telehealth technology offers features such as screen sharing and text messaging, which can enhance communication between therapist and client, leading to a more productive therapeutic relationship.

Of course, there are some potential drawbacks to telehealth therapy as well. For example, some people may feel uncomfortable with the technology or find it difficult to establish a therapeutic relationship without the benefit of in-person interactions. Additionally, certain mental health conditions may require specialized forms of therapy or more intensive treatment that cannot be delivered through telehealth.

Overall, telehealth can be an effective and convenient option for couples and individuals seeking mental health treatment, and it is important for clients and therapists to work together to find the best mode of therapy for each individual's unique needs and circumstances.
